Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) today issued the following statement on reports that President Trump will pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement on climate change. The 2015 agreement—which seeks to address and retard climate change—was signed by every nation in the world except Nicaragua (who thought the agreement too weak) and Syria (in the midst of a civil war):
“Pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Change Accord would not be leadership. It would be an act of cowardice.
“The Trump administration has a blatant disregard for the truth and is determined to turn the misleading claims and tired talking points of a handful of billionaires and their lobbyists into pro-polluter policy. Pulling out of the Paris Accord will have long lasting negative impacts on the health, safety, and prosperity of our families.
“In doing this, the President would relinquish American leadership, further alienate our closest allies, and make our nation the lone villain in the story of how the world attempted to reduce the impacts of climate change. Though it may fall on deaf ears, I urge the President to not take this devastating step.”
