Congressman Alan Lowenthal issued the following statement regarding the removal of California State Senator Janet Nguyen from the floor of the Senate in Sacramento:
“ I commend Senator Janet Nguyen for standing up with great courage to express her deeply-held views born out of her personal experiences as a refugee fleeing communist Vietnam. She spoke to the painful history and hardship that many of our shared constituents in the Vietnamese American community feel. Senator Nguyen’s removal from the Senate floor was uncalled for and it was wrong. I am glad to see President Pro Tem Kevin de León take responsibility for those actions and initiate an independent review of the incident. Vietnamese Americans across the United States do not forget that those in Vietnam continue to be denied their freedom of speech, a fact that Sen. Nguyen denounced.
“I will never take for granted the freedom to speak our minds when so many in the world cannot. The fight for the freedom of speech continues, whether it is in Vietnam or here in the United States.”
