May 16, 2013
Press Release
Newly-elected member of Congress Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) will join over fifty new U.S. Representatives from states across the country at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics (IOP) next week for a bipartisan conference focusing on exercising leadership in Congress and the issues that they will face.

"For more than four decades, the IOP program has helped prepare new members of Congress for legislative effectiveness,” Representative-elect Lowenthal said. "I firmly believe that, as President John F. Kennedy once wrote, 'Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.' I'm honored and look forward to participating in the IOP program, which will help provide me with additional tools to represent California's 47th Congressional district in Washington, D.C.”

IOP Director Trey Grayson said he was pleased to once again welcome new members of Congress to Harvard. “This conference provides an opportunity to gain important guidance from current and former Representatives, policy experts, and key U.S. policymakers and political practitioners.”

The 20th Bipartisan Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress will run from Tuesday evening, December 11 through Friday afternoon, December 14 at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

The new members of Congress will participate in a variety of sessions, led by academics, practitioners, and current and former members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Topics will include the economy and sessions on the federal budget, American power and competitiveness, Middle East policy, communications and navigating the legislative process.
