Congressmen Lowenthal and Chabot Urge Cambodian Government to Cease Harassment of Opposition Party

May 26, 2016
Press Release
Congressional Cambodia Caucus Co-Chairs Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) and Congressman Steve Chabot (OH-01) today issued the following statement on the Cambodian government's escalating crackdown on government opposition party members in Cambodia:

"As the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Cambodia Caucus, we are deeply concerned with the recent deterioration of the political situation in Cambodia. Armed security forces have been deployed at the headquarters of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party in an attempt to arrest its deputy leader, Mr. Kem Sokha. Upcoming elections in 2017 and 2018 will not be considered fair and free unless the current climate of fear and intimidation facing the political opposition in Cambodia comes to an end. We urge the Cambodian government to immediately cease all harassment of the Cambodia National Rescue Party and foster an environment where democracy can thrive and flourish."
