Congressman Lowenthal Votes to Restore SALT Deduction
Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) today voted to pass H.R. 5377, the Restoring Tax Fairness for States and Localities Act of 2019, which passed the House in a 218-206 vote.
The bill restores the full deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) that was capped at $10,000 by the 2017 Republican Tax Law. It also enhanced above-the-line deductions for teachers and first responders to offset the out-of-pocket expenses these hardworking government employees incur to serve our communities.
“The Republican tax plan put a callous target on communities like mine—states and cities that have stepped into the void left by the federal government and funded essential community services like transportation, schools, and first responders” Lowenthal said. “I was proud to vote to restore the SALT deduction for 2020 and 2021 to reverse the harmful tax increase the Trump Tax Law exacted from my hardworking middle-class constituents.”
The legislation is revenue-neutral and pays for the deduction by restoring the previous tax rate for the highest income Americans.
