Congressman Lowenthal Statement on Successful Vote to Reauthorize the Export-Import Bank

Press Release

Congressman Alan Lowenthal today issued the following statement regarding the passage of H.R. 597 which reauthorized and reopened the Export-Import Bank, the official export credit agency of the United States federal government that was allowed to expire through inaction by Congress in June.

"This is about helping American businesses, protecting American jobs, and supporting American labor. The Ex-Im Bank, at no cost to the American taxpayer, levels the international playing field for thousands upon thousands of American businesses both large and small. It is a vital tool for American manufacturers trying to compete in fiercely competitive global markets.

"Last year, the Ex-Im Bank enabled more than $27 billion in U.S. exports, directly supporting more than 164,000 American jobs at thousands of companies.

"I was proud to vote to reauthorize the bank and the 313-118 vote clearly showed that supporting American companies and American jobs can be a bipartisan issue.

"This is also a historic vote—the first time since 2002 that a discharge petition has been used to break the logjam. It proves that Congress can work and it can solve important issues facing America."
