Congressman Lowenthal Statement on State of the Union Speech By President Trump

Press Release

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) today issued the following statement in response to President Trump's State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress:

"For all its flaws, last night's State of the Union speech hit new lows when the President reiterated his xenophobic immigration proposals, framing his plans in a divisive and shameful demonization of immigrants.

"His insinuation that every immigrant is somehow a criminal or drain on the nation, despite study after study showing the exact opposite, was offensive. He also falsely claimed that immigrants selected in the visa lottery program are simply given a green card and allowed in the country with no vetting. In fact, these immigrants are scrutinized just like any other legal immigrant to the U.S.

"He continued the demonization by continually referring to family reunification as "chain migration," and falsely asserting that an immigrant can bring nearly unlimited numbers of distant relatives to the U.S.--despite current laws that prevent this.

"Perhaps most disturbing was that the President, in laying out his proposal, left no doubt that he plans to hold nearly 2 million Dreamers hostage in his attempt to win concessions from lawmakers on building a border wall and dramatically scaling back legal immigration through the lottery system or family reunification.

"These draconian immigration proposals, all in the name of xenophobia and nativism, are wholly un-American and run counter to who we are as a nation. I cannot support these attacks on our immigrant communities and such divisive and destructive immigration policies.

"I will continue to fight for the protections that most Americans agree Dreamers should have, just as I will continue to fight for the protection of legal immigrants through programs like the diversity visa lottery and family reunification programs."
