Congressman Lowenthal Statement on SCOTUS Nominee Neil Gorsuch
Congressman Alan Lowenthal today issued the following statement regarding the nomination by President Trump of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court:
"Any nominee selected to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court should be properly vetted and examined as to their ability to serve as the best voice for advancing justice in our nation and as a fair defender of the Constitution and the constitutional rights of individuals. Justices serve, by the design of the Founders, within a separate branch of the government meant to be a judicial check on the Legislative and Executive branches.
"However, a Supreme Court nominee is not an agent of the President; a nominee should not be an agent of ideology. A nominee, if confirmed, should be a representative of the people to ensure that the rights of all Americans are upheld. I will only support a candidate who I believe is dedicated to upholding the Constitution, even above the desires of the President, as their guiding principle.
