Congressman Lowenthal Statement On New BLM Methane Waste Prevention Rule Covering Public Lands

Press Release

Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) today issued the following statement on the release of a new methane waste prevention rule covering public lands by the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management:

"This rule does two very important things.  First and foremost, this rule is designed to prevent the waste of a valuable public resource.  There is simply no good reason to freely allow companies to take natural gas, a valuable commodity that can be used to power and heat our homes, and simply burn it off or let it escape into the air. That is unnecessary waste, pure and simple.  The wasted natural gas belongs to the American people, and when it's sold, instead of just being pointlessly burned off, the American people get a share of the revenue.

"Second, methane emissions from oil and gas development have been increasing in recent years, and this rule would limit those emissions.  Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that causes long-term damage to the atmosphere, so by measuring and curbing methane pollution, this rule can help us build healthier, safer communities.

"I applaud Interior Secretary Jewell and Bureau of Land Management Director Kornze for finalizing this important step toward smart stewardship of our nation's shared resources."
