Congressman Alan Lowenthal issued the following statement on the appointment of Haider al-Abadi as the new Prime Minister of Iraq:
"A nation's greatest strength is always a foundation of common ground among its citizens. The appointment of Dr. Abadi as Iraqi Prime Minister marks a great step forward toward the creation of that common ground and ultimately the peaceful unification of Iraq. I am encouraged by this development and hope the appointment of Dr. Abadi signals a move toward the establishment of an inclusive Iraqi government which promotes the hopes, dreams, and needs of all the Iraqi people."
