Congressman Lowenthal Praises House Committee Passage of Cambodia Democracy Act

May 17, 2018
Press Release
Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47) today issued the following statement regarding the House Foreign Affairs Committee passage of the Cambodian Democracy Act—bipartisan legislation co-sponsored by the Congressman and aimed at sanctioning Cambodian officials responsible for undermining democracy in the Asian nation.

"This is a major step toward holding Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his regime accountable for not following internal Cambodian and international agreements he signed promising free and fair elections. I believe these sanctions will get the attention of the Cambodian government. I also believe that our action today will encourage other members of the international community to take similar actions and bring additional pressure to bear on Hun Sen. But, we are running out of time to act. Waiting until tomorrow is not an option. The U.S. needs to act now. The world needs to act -- to make clear to Hun Sen that we stand with the Cambodian people and the free and fair elections they were promised and that they deserve."
