Press Release
Congressman Alan Lowenthal on Wednesday received the Friend of the National Parks Award from the nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA). This award recognizes the Congressman's votes during the 113th Congress which contributed to the protection and enhancement of America's national parks.
"Our national parks are treasures that we as a nation have a duty to preserve and protect. We do this not just for ourselves, but so that future generations of Americans can also partake in the majestic and unmarred beauty of nature throughout our nation," Congressman Lowenthal said. "We also do this so that we can, in some small way, connect with our past. We can walk in the footsteps of George Washington or Thomas Jefferson along the Appalachian Trail, or stand where John Muir first viewed the beauty of Yosemite. Our national parks are both our history and our future."
NPCA's Friend of the National Parks Award was established in 1999 to track and publicize congressional members' votes on significant park issues. This year, NPCA tracked votes for five national park-related votes in the House of Representatives. Congressman Lowenthal voted in favor of national parks on all five of these bills.
"It's an honor to recognize Congressman Lowenthal for supporting our national parks on the floor of the House during the 113th Congress," NPCA President and CEO Clark Bunting said. "As the 114th Congress works on policies and funding levels impacting our national parks, I look forward to working with the Congressman to ensure national parks have safe roadways, are well maintained, and have the resources they need to thrive for their upcoming centennial."
