Press Release

Congressman Alan Lowenthal today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court 5-4 ruling in Obergefell v Hodges that has made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states:

"This is a historic day in our national journey towards ending discrimination and extending the freedom for all Americans to live, love, and prosper. In their decision, the Supreme Court has upheld our nation's fundamental values of equality, fairness, and diversity.

"Most importantly, the court has made clear that not only is marriage a "fundamental right" that must be extended to LGBT people, but to deny it would be a violation of equal protection.

"This momentous decision will be long remembered for bringing respect, dignity, and stability to millions of LGBT families by recognizing what we already knew: that love is love. LGBT families are equal in every way with other families.

"Despite this however, we have so much more to do. LGBT people still face discrimination which must be addressed with comprehensive federal nondiscrimination protections. This is a goal that we as a nation must work toward."
