Congressman Lowenthal Applauds Israel-UAE Agreement and Cancellation of Unilateral Annexation Plans
Congressman Alan Lowenthal (CA-47), today, applauded the announcement that Israel and the United Arab Emirates would establish full diplomatic relations and that Israel would not move forward on previous efforts to unilaterally annex West Bank territory:
“As a strong supporter of Israel and the United States-Israel relationship, I am pleased by the announcement yesterday that Israel and the United Arab Emirates are normalizing relations. This is an important and welcome step for both nations, the region, and the world.
“More importantly, however, is the announcement that Israel is backing away from threats to unilaterally annex occupied territories in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, which will imperil the possibility of a two-state solution.
“It was a critical step when, in December 2019, the House passed a resolution I introduced, H.Res.326, concluding that ‘only the outcome of a two-state solution that enhances stability and security for Israel, Palestinians, and their neighbors can both ensure the state of Israel’s survival as a Jewish and democratic state and fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own.’
“It is my hope that both Israelis and Palestinians will now return to the negotiating table and do the difficult but necessary work of establishing that peace.”
Congressman Lowenthal’s resolution, H.Res.326, which reaffirmed the United States’ longstanding support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, passed the House in December 2019.
